I am always confused with this ‘oku yen’. How much is ichi oku and how is this related to million? Is there any better way to remember this number?

Japanese people use multiples of ten thousand to write larger numbers. Ten thousand (10,000) is called ‘man’. Ichiman is 10,000.

(I purposely place the comma after 10)

Juman is 10,0000 (a hundred thousand)

hyakuman is 10,00,000 (1 million)

senman is 1000,0000 (10 million)

next number is the ‘oku’, that is manman – 10,000,0000

Japanese numbering is different from the Western system. See the below;

。。。。十 (1 to 10)

。。。百 (20 to 100)

。。。千 (200 to 1000)

。。。万 (1000 to 10,000)

。。百万 (10,000 to 100,0000 Hyakuman)

。。 (200,0000 to 1000,0000 issenman)

。。。一億 (Ichi Oku) 2000,0000 to 10000,0000 (Oku)

10000,0000 → Ten Thousand Ten Thousand is called Oku.
