Heisei period was started when the Japanese Emperor Akihito reigned to the throne. It was on a Sunday in 1989.01.08. Emperor Akihito was in power for just over 30 years and retired officially on Tuesday, 2019.04.30.

Hello Jay, I know you asked this question just for the fun of asking! Heisei era started on 8 January 1989. 平成 Heisei era represents the reign of Emperor Akihito. He was in the power for 30 years. Heisei era was ended on 30 April 2019. Heisei era was followed by the current Reiwa 令和 era.
